Abstract:
Obersturmführer Konrad (b. 1906) was sent to the Warsaw ghetto in July 1942, after the Great Deportation Action; he was appointed head of the Werterfassung - an institution which seized and sorted out the property left behind by the Jews deported from the ghetto in July 1942. Up to 4,000 ghetto inmates worked in the Werterfassung; almost all of them were deported in April 1943, following the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Konrad took part in quelling the uprising. Based on survivors' memoirs, Konrad's testimony given right after the war, and the stenographic records of his trial in Poland in 1951, examines his role in the everyday life of the ghetto and in the destruction of the Jews. He was executed in Warsaw in 1952.
