Abstract:
Agrees with Goldhagen's definition of a "German antisemitically-based cultural history" which was guided by a stereotypical model of thinking about Jews and Jewish topics. In the 19th-20th centuries that antisemitism was modified, leading, under the influence of Social Darwinism and racial biology, to a mental disposition which enabled a readiness to perpetrate genocide. States that there exists only marginal research on the reaction of German academic literary circles to Nazi antisemitism. Examines in detail the complex relationship between Nazism and German literary research, focusing on the reception of Romanticism, emphasizing the systematic exclusion of Jewish researchers and their scientific contributions from the field, and the institutional and conceptual changes in research on Romanticism which was influenced by Nazi antisemitism.
