Abstract:
With the emphasis on Austria, traces Christian antisemitism from the New Testament and the early Church to the Middle Ages: to pogroms touched off by the religious fervor of the Crusades; blood libels; the accusation of Host desecration or of a conspiracy to poison the wells; defamation of the Talmud; resentment against moneylenders; and simple greed. Shows how these motives persisted in the early modern period, in the racial antisemitism of the 19th-20th centuries, and into our own days, when they are disseminated not only in print but even more effectively through the Internet.
