Abstract:
Discusses the phenomenon of avoidance of discussion of the Holocaust, extending to actual Holocaust denial in Europe and the USA today. Even the large and strong Jewish community in the USA found itself on the defensive in cases such as Bitburg, and extremist and neo-Nazi groups ranging from the Aryan Nations to Louis Farrakhan are encouraged by the memory of the Holocaust. Describes the Holocaust denial literature disseminated by antisemitic groups, and the paralyzing influence of the Holocaust on the ideas of some Jewish intellectuals such as Noam Chomsky who defended the intellectual integrity of Robert Faurisson's denial of the existence of gas chambers in the name of freedom of expression. Argues that attitudes like those of Chomsky are the result of intellectual pride and the domination of abstract ideology, which prevents these intellectuals from recognizing the full horror of the events of the Holocaust.
