Abstract:
In 1992 a survey was conducted in the USA, in which 491 respondents replied to at least one of the questions which dealt with the Holocaust. Results of the survey indicate that only a minority of the population believes that the Holocaust was unique. Most of the respondents concur with the United Nations' definition of genocide; a minority compares the Holocaust to a war or to prejudices and their resultant conflicts. Examines three hypotheses for the motivation behind Holocaust comparisons: the influence of education and gender on ways of knowing about historical events, effects of race and political orientation on ethnoracial comparisons, and generational differences in collective memory. Comparisons to the Holocaust are best predicted by education, gender, race, and current events.
