Abstract:
Briefly overviewing European and global policies of Holocaust remembrance, focuses on the politics of the intergovernmental Council of Europe concerning this issue. The main emphasis of the Council's current politics is on Holocaust education, based on an international perspective rather than on sometimes conflicting national narratives. This goal affects the mode of the Council's Holocaust narrative: it prefers the victims' and the rescuers' perspectives; while condemning genocidal ideologies, it barely names perpetrators; it includes numerous non-Jewish victim groups under the Holocaust definition; it extolls the non-Jewish rescuers of Jews, inter alia, as bearers of the qualities peculiar to the good citizen of Europe today. Strikingly, the Council's fight against antisemitism is institutionally separated from the Holocaust remembrance and education portfolio.
