Abstract:
Traces antisemitism in American sports from the Civil War through the end of the millennium. Concludes that Jews have been discriminated against, but less so than African-Americans, as in other aspects of American life. Antisemitism was related to the social status of the sport; that is, there was more exclusion in yachting than in basketball, baseball, and boxing, and more in clubs than in professional sports. Hostility to Jews in athletics paralleled anti-Jewish sentiment in general, rising after the Civil War, peaking in the 1930s, and decreasing after World War II to its current low point.
