Abstract:
Examines the conception of the absurdity of life and suffering in the writings of Aharon Appelfeld, the Israeli novelist and Holocaust survivor. Under the influence of works by Kafka and Bialik, Appelfeld has attempted to show that the Holocaust cannot be explained in the logic of everyday reality. Analyzes his novel "Badenheim 1939" (1974) which portrays the isolation (and later deportation) of the Jews in a fictitious Austrian resort town, and their failure to comprehend their fate.
