Abstract:
The Ghettozentralbücherei opened in Theresienstadt in November 1942; Dr. Emil Utitz was the head of the library from its opening until the liberation in 1945. The library had various subdivisions and branches dispersed throughout the ghetto. For the ghetto inmates, reading was not only a way to escape the grim reality, but also to try to comprehend their experiences.
