Abstract:
Discusses the antisemitism of the French art critic and novelist Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848-1907). Analyzing various works, contends that his antisemitism has three aspects: socioeconomic, theological, and racial. Reveals Huysmans' ties with Zola until the publication of "J'accuse", after which he accused Zola of hatred of the Church and love of money. Demonstrates that Huysmans' criticism of modern Christian art echoes his belief in a Jewish plot to harm Christianity. Argues that Huysmans' anti-Jewish sentiments portray not only the conventional prejudices of late 19th-century France, but also his own creed of the Jew as heir to and accomplice of the Devil. Concludes that Huysmans' writing is inseparable from his antisemitism, which is an integral part of his literary ideology.
