Abstract:
Disputes the view that Heine disappeared from German literary history during the Nazi period. Although, compared to previous periods, there appeared fewer articles and scholarly works on Heine, it was not only permitted but even good propaganda to write or teach about him, provided one vilified him. He was the ideal Jewish type, cosmopolitan, communist, decadent, corrupt and corrupting, an emigrant hostile to Germany: the opposite of the ideal German; and his language and style were miserable. Thus he could be used both to promote antisemitism and to enhance German self-glorification.
