Abstract:
Advocates a dialectic approach to understanding Adorno's so-called "dictum" about both the barbarity and impossibility of writing poetry after Auschwitz. Contends that these phrases were taken out of context, whereby they lose the problematic quality conferred on them by the argument put forward by Adorno in his writings as a whole. Criticizes the established view that Adorno meant that post-Holocaust literature was impossible. Notes that he implied in his works that literature had to persevere in order to resist the barbaric forces to which culture had succumbed under the Nazis.
