Abstract: Describes the difficulties experienced by Jewish candidates for teaching positions in the School of Medicine at the University of Berlin in the 19th century. Several Jews repeatedly recommended by the faculty because of their distinguished achievements were rejected by the Ministry of Culture. Members of the faculty, chief among them R. Virchow, were among the signatories of a declaration of 1880 condemning Treitschke and the antisemites. In contrast, in 1933 faculty members welcomed the Nazi legislation which led to the dismissal of a third of their number.
