Abstract:
Discusses the place of science, specifically chemistry, in Levi's experiences in the Holocaust and in his memoirs. Contrasts his life with that of Fritz Haber, a Jewish chemist in Germany, who developed poison gas for Germany to use in World War I. He later became head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry until 1933, when he resigned. Haber converted to Protestantism in 1892, to further his career. States that Haber and his colleagues at the Institute experimented with pesticides, which eventually were developed for use as Zyklon-B in the Holocaust.
