Abstract:
Excerpts of an exchange of letters between philosophers Dorion Cairns and Aron Gurwitsch (born in Lithuania, emigrated to the U.S. in 1940 from France), both students of Husserl, in response to a letter in "The Nation" which argued for the superiority of French over German love of the spirit. It claimed that while both countries are antisemitic, even under Vichy the French paid tribute to the Jewish philosopher Henri Bergson whereas the Germans neglected the Jewish counterpart in Germany, Edmund Husserl. Gurwitsch contended that the roots of Nazism and its widespread appeal lie in Germany's strong Hegelian and romantic tradition. Cairns argued that Romanticism is but one component of German society and Nazism does not reflect the majority's mindset. Includes an introduction to the letters.
