Abstract:
Analyzes the booklet written by Abbé Grégoire in 1788 on the emancipation of the Jews in France. The text bears contradictions inherent in the perception of Jewish social reality: it reveals prejudices about the Jews, but at the same time it invites French citizens to accept and tolerate the Jews' privileges. The antisemitic prejudices are related to criticism of the traditional theological wisdom of the Jews, considered as mere superstition, and their threatening relationship with credit and economic mobility. Examines the relationship between rural society and the Jews, the issue of usury, and in particular Grégoire's proposal to have the Jews work in productive sectors, such as agriculture, the main form of integration in French society. Pp. 36-46 deal with the historiographical discussion of the emancipation of the Jews.
