Abstract:
Observes that physical assaults against Jews in Australia are rare; vandalism against synagogues is somewhat more frequent. The greater problem consists of insults and threats on the street and over the telephone, and especially in the spread of hate propaganda. Racist fringe groups distribute "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and secondary literature based on it. Up to now there is no legal prohibition of such propaganda. The Jewish community monitors antisemitic incidents, campaigns for anti-racist legislation and more vigorous police action, and attempts to counter antisemitic propaganda on the premise that acts of violence are the outcome of misguided beliefs.
