Abstract:
Traces Schocken's life and the achievements of his publishing house and chain of department stores. The Nazis permitted the publishing house to issue Jewish books, which they assumed would be read only by Jews; when some of these (e.g. Kafka) were acclaimed also by non-Jews, they were immediately suppressed. The author's mother, who worked in the branch department store of Schocken in Lugau, recalled the attack on the store during the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, the unsuccessful efforts of the Nazis to deter customers from buying in the store, and finally its Aryanization.
