Abstract:
Argues that Fassbinder did not intend to incite antisemitism in his play, but rather to expose the reality of postwar Germany reflected in the underworld which planned the moral destruction of the city (Frankfurt), and he imposed the execution of this task on the "rich Jew" who would know that Jews were a taboo subject and would not be punished by the authorities. However, sometimes the text itself implies that the author shares the antisemitic feelings he describes. Discusses Fassbinder's use of negative Jewish stereotypes and the prejudice expressed by the characters in his work.
