Abstract:
Discusses the poem "Bashert" by child survivor Irena Klepfisz and two works by children of survivors, Art Spiegelman's "Maus" and New Zealander Deb Filler's one-woman film "Punch Me in the Stomach", as efforts of remembrance aimed at demythologizing the Holocaust. All three deal with the complex dynamics of remembrance and identity, thus challenging the mythologization of the Holocaust in American Jewish culture and its centrality in American Judaism. A central theme in the works discussed is the desire for understanding and its impossibility.
