Abstract:
Compares 14th and 15th century Italian anti-Jewish polemics. 15th century polemics were written by jurists, university professors, and politicians rather than ecclesiastics, and were based on actual contacts with Jews rather than on abstract theory. They used post-biblical works, such as the Midrash and Talmud, to demonstrate the philosophical superiority of Christianity, based on the Disputation of Barcelona (1263) and Ramon Martí's "Pugio fidei". They also mention blood libels an incitement to persecution, for example in the polemical works of Pietro Bruti, Bishop of Cattaro.
