Abstract:
In summer 1944, during the deportations of Jews from Hungary to Auschwitz, hundreds of Jews crossed the Hungarian-Romanian border in Transylvania, trying to find refuge in Romania. Documents concerning Jews who crossed the border in June 1944 show that they were intercepted by Romanian gendarmes; most of them were sent to the Târgu Jiu camp and liberated in August 1944. The documents also show that many Romanians were involved in the rescue of Jews in this way, from the Romanian consulate in Oradea to common peasants living in the border area.
