Abstract:
Discusses possible sources of Wagner's antisemitism, including the loss of a composition which he had sent to Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Wagner's resentment of the popularity of the Jewish composer Meyerbeer, and Wagner's belief that money-hungry Jews had attempted to hinder his career. Notes that although some Jews actually helped him in his career, he criticized them both individually and collectively in his writings. He believed that his own music was the embodiment of German culture, which the Jews were trying to destroy.
