Abstract: This article argues that the watchers tradition influences Mark 1:21–28. Mark constructs the pericope as an intercalation that becomes intelligible once this demonological framework is registered. The central portion of the “sandwich” presents the content of Jesus’s teaching mentioned in the outer frames. Jesus’s didactic and exorcistic activity in the synagogue are one and the same. His teaching is “not like the scribes,” insofar as Jesus does not act as a text broker, mediating written traditions to the illiterate masses. Nor is his spiritual authority dependent on scribal attainments, as is the case with other Second Temple intermediaries, such as Enoch, Noah, and Solomon.

Abstract: This article argues that whatever else Joseph and Aseneth is and for whatever other reason that it might have been written, the narrative is an entertaining tale. The starting point for this thesis is an assessment of the extent to which Joseph and Aseneth can be characterized as “fan fiction.” The article suggests that because both fan fiction and Joseph and Aseneth are “archontic,” fan theory can profitably inform Joseph and Aseneth. This theory is then applied to Joseph and Aseneth to throw new light on the motivation for which Joseph and Aseneth was written, specifically suggesting that, like fan fiction, the narrative is the result of the simultaneous adoration of and frustration with a specific cultural text, namely the Joseph Cycle. The article further contends that the narrative makes extensive use of irony, humor, and adventure as it displays various tendencies of fan fiction.

Abstract: "Generically, theologically, and concerning content, Mark and Joseph and Aseneth are quite different. The former is a product of the nascent Jesus movement and influenced by the Greco-Roman Bioi ("Lives"). It details the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of a wandering Galilean. The latter is a Hellenistic Jewish narrative influenced by Greek romances and Jewish novellas. It expands the laconic account of Joseph's marriage to Aseneth in Genesis 41 into a full-fledged love and adventure story. Despite these differences, Elder finds remarkable similarities that the texts share. Elder uses both texts to examine media and modes of composition in antiquity, arguing that they were both composed via dictation from their antecedent oral traditions. Elder's volume offers a fresh approach to the composition of both Joseph and Aseneth and Mark as well as to many of their respective interpretive debates."--Bloomsbury publishing
