Abstract:
The Holocaust was not the only cause of the establishment of the State of Israel. It acted, however, as a catalyst which considerably speeded up the attainment of Zionist goals. The Nazis' rise to power in Germany increased the rate of Jewish emigration to Palestine after 1933, and the postwar DP problem, created by the Holocaust, made the Zionist cause even more urgent. The Nazi dictatorship and the genocide transformed Zionist goals, making the attainment of statehood a short-term task. The Holocaust also transformed the Jewish polity in the Americas and Europe, rendering Zionism the leading Jewish political movement.
