Abstract:
Traces Nelly Sachs's path, expressed in her poetry, from an assimilated youth to identification with the suffering of the Jewish people after her own last-minute escape from Nazi Germany, and the death of many friends - and finally to identification with all of suffering humanity. Mentions that she found it difficult to live with her image as the representative of persecuted Jewry; her fears of reprisals against her by antisemites caused her to spend three years in a sanatorium.
