Abstract:
The prevalence of conspiracy theories started in the 18th century, mainly in France and Germany, with allegations against secret societies, especially the Freemasons. In the 19th century these began to be identified with the Jews, who supposedly inspired them and covertly used them as a vehicle for world domination. (This, although most of the German lodges were anti-Jewish and did not admit Jews.) Cites many antisemitic writings that link Freeemasonry and Judaism and anticipate themes of the" Protocols of the Elders of Zion". Traces the literary sources of the "Protocols" and their dissemination.
