Abstract:
Discusses the Polish-language Holocaust poetry of Ficowski, especially his collection "Odczytanie popiołow" (1979 in London, 1980 in Poland), which expressed sympathy for the tragic fate of the Jews, particularly children, during and after the war. His poem "Gdansk Station, 1968" reflects the exodus of the Jews from Poland in the wake of the antisemitic campaign of that time. Ficowski's poems are considered by many the deepest and most authentic testimony to the tragedy of the Holocaust created by a non-Jewish poet. His work has been translated into English, Hebrew, and Yiddish, among other languages.
