Abstract:
A study based on interviews with eight teachers in primary schools in Scotland (five of whom teach aspects of the Holocaust). Concludes that teaching the Holocaust from grade 5 is successful and stimulating both for teachers and pupils. Previous teacher interest is not required, but there is a need for in-service training in the use of survivor testimony and how to deal with concentration and death camps, etc. The teachers focus more on combating racism than on antisemitism. Primary teachers use a multi-disciplinary approach that employs art and role-playing. Since Holocaust education is not compulsory, pupils will be exposed to the subject only if there is encouragement from local authorities or the government.
