Abstract:
Discusses Charlie Chaplin's film parody of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and fascism, that was planned and written in 1937 as an early propaganda film. Although initially opposed by the (de facto) American film censor, Chaplin's film provided a model for later films that combined entertainment with political instruction. Chaplin was against American isolationism and hoped that the U.S. would join the war against Hitler. Although his film depicted Jews being persecuted and ghettoized, and his sympathy for them was clear, it did not foresee the Holocaust.
