Abstract:
Presents the Latin text (pp. 305-327) of the manuscript, apparently dating from the 13th century, describing the torture and crucifixion of a Christian boy by a Jewish family near Bristol. The act took place in a latrine and the motive was not to obtain the boy's blood but to repeat the crucifixion of Jesus and to vilify Jesus and the Virgin Mary. During the crucifixion and after the boy's death there were appearances of angels, and of Mary and Jesus. The Jew's wife and son repented and expressed their intention to convert to Christianity, whereupon the Jew killed them also. Notes that we have no knowledge of an actual ritual murder case or of a martyr's cult in Bristol.
Note:
Includes the Latin text of the ms. (pp. 305-327).
