Abstract:
Discusses Robert Mayer Lumiansky's 1948 edition (and prose translation) of "The Canterbury Tales", from which he removed "The Prioress's Tale" due to its extreme antisemitism. Placing poststructuralist ethics alongside the practice of literary criticism within the context of the modern university, contends that "The Prioress's Tale" raises questions such as whether bigoted texts should be introduced into instructional environments and if so, how educators ought to proceed. Argues that teachers and students should be exposed to such texts, and to non-closure, as a bulwark to totalitarian impulses, but respects Lumiansky's ethical dilemma and his decision in the context of his times.
Note:
On Lumiansky's 1948 prose translation of "The Canterbury Tales", from which he removed "The Prioress's Tale".
