In:  Revista de Estudos Judaicos 5 (2003-2004) 7-35
    Language: Portuguese
    Year of publication: 2003
Titel der Quelle: Revista de Estudos Judaicos
    Angaben zur Quelle: 5 (2003-2004) 7-35
    Keywords: Castan, S. E., ; Antisemitism ; Holocaust denial
Abstract: Between 1988-2003, the antisemitic Brazilian writer and owner of the publishing house Revisão, S.E. Castan (pseudonym of Siegfried Ellwanger), published more than 40 antisemitic and revisionist books. These included works by Brazilian authors, such as Gustavo Barroso's "História secreta do Brasil" ["The Secret History of Brazil"] and his own book, "Holocausto: Judeu ou alemão? Nos bastidores da mentira do século" ["Holocaust: Jewish or German? Behind the Scenes of the Lie of the Century"]; the latter was translated into Spanish, German, and English, and saw 29 editions. He also distributed antisemitic films and ran a revisionist study center, the Centro Nacional de Pesquisas Históricas. Describes lawsuits brought against him by Brazilian Jewish and human rights organizations, as well as details of his trials in 1989-2003. Notes that Brazilian justice hesitated between condemning his obvious antisemitism and defending freedom of expression, but eventually he was sentenced for racism and for incitement against citizens of Jewish origin.
