Abstract:
Focuses on anti-Judaic polemics in Christian literature following two invasions of Christian-held Palestine ("the Holy Land") by Persians and Arabs in the early 7th century. The Christians were traumatized by such disasters as the taking of the relic of the Cross and, following a traditional religious and literary trope, blamed the Jews. Although some Jews apparently did aid the invaders, blaming all of them was not correct historically. Although the invaders were Muslims, the Christians blamed the Jews; the utility of the trope was too seductive for Christian writers to resist, even when historical circumstances had changed.
