Abstract:
Summarizes briefly the life of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytski, his relations with the Jewish religious leadership in the Lvov area before World War II, and his wartime activities. Argues that Yad Vashem should immediately recognize him as a Righteous among the Nations since, as a direct result of his instructions, members of the clergy reporting to him hid and protected 150-200 Jews, mostly children. Rejects arguments forwarded by Yad Vashem against this recognition. Sheptytski was a Ukrainian nationalist, and supported the Ukrainian movement and the formation of its armed forces; after suffering for two years from Soviet policies, he could regard the Germans as liberators. Sheptytski's disappointment with Nazi rule came relatively quickly, in one year. He condemned the murder of Jews and expressed this condemnation both to the Vatican and to the Ukrainians. Notes that Yad Vashem recognized the former Nazis Oskar Schindler and Karl Plagge as Righteous; in the same way, it must forgive the Metropolitan for his having expected better of the German occupation than it was and for his failure to control the brutal behavior of some Ukrainians.
