Abstract:
States that Maerlant, a Flemish cleric and scholar (1225/35-1300) could not have known any Jews personally, since there were almost none in Flanders in his time; he also had no firsthand knowledge of Hebrew writings. Nevertheless, he referred to Jews in many of his works, sometimes objectively, even favorably, more often pejoratively. He distorted Jewish sources and presented many anti-Jewish exempla.
Note:
Includes extensive quotations from the writings of the 13th-century theologian.
