Abstract:
Spies (1897-1998) was deported from her home in Munich to Theresienstadt in 1942, and there discovered her ability to write. After the war she returned to Munich. Her short story "Das schwarze Kleid" (1992) traces the rounds of a black dress from one Theresienstadt prisoner to the next: sometimes because of the owner's death or deportation, sometimes in barter, sometimes as a gift. The last owner was given the dress by her lover, who was executed for having illegally traded cigarettes for it, and she treasures it in his memory; but on returning to Germany she gives it to a bombed-out German friend - a gesture of reconciliation. Through the device of the dress, Spies gives a vivid picture of the social structure of the ghetto and the differing reactions of the prisoners.
