Abstract:
Focuses on determining the dating of Chrysostom's "Adversus Iudaeos" discourses, concluding that Discourse 5 was delivered on Yom Kippur in the year 387. This timing suggests that Chrysostom was addressing Judaizing Christians whom he wanted to wean away from Judaism, including by preventing them from attending Jewish services on this day. Part of his argument was that Jewish observances did not constitute true reverence or repentance. All the sermons are polemical and denigrate Judaism. Some assert that demons inhabit the souls of Jews; others are more theological.
