Abstract:
Discusses two conflicting models of commemorating the Holocaust victims: political and racial. The first underlines the anti-fascist struggle and recalls crimes and the Nazi genocidal actions in general; the second concentrates on the memory of the Shoah. Surveys historical works on the uniqueness of the Jewish Holocaust and warns against the dangers of an exclusive attitude (e.g. treating these events as concerning only the Jews). Underlines the central place of the Jewish Holocaust among other genocides, but pleads for teaching its history in the larger context of European history, as an event concerning all people, not only the Jews.
