Abstract:
Suggests that Tiberius banished the Jews from Rome, and conscripted young Jewish men for military service, because they insisted on keeping their privileges both as Jews and as Romans. Dual citizenship was not recognized in Rome. At a time of scarcity, it was convenient for Rome to rid itself of these doubtful citizens (who, as citizens, had a right to receive rations from the state) and to force those of military age to do their civic duty. Analyzes the accounts of Tacitus, Suetonius, and Josephus, who seem to give different explanations for the expulsion.
