Abstract:
A Polish American-Jewish American dialogue group was established in 1979 to deal primarily with antisemitism among Polish Americans and anti-Polonism among Jewish Americans. The strained relations between the two stemmed largely from their different reactions to the Holocaust, with the Poles being very sensitive to their own losses in World War II and the Jews often accusing Poles of responsibility for the Holocaust, e.g. for "Polish" death camps. Thus, there has been a problem of stereotypes amongst both Poles and Jews. The efforts at mutual understanding have taken place among elites, with the Jews led by the American Jewish Committee, and the Poles by the Polish American Congress, which eventually pulled out of the dialogue. Contention between the two sides revolved around Claude Lanzmann's film "Shoah" and the issue of the Auschwitz convent and the crosses. Results of the dialogue have been mixed but it continues, although without representatives of the Polish American Congress. Cooperation has involved some non-American issues, such as Jewish support for Polish democracy, Polish-Israeli relations, and attitudes of Catholic clergy in Poland toward the Jews.
