Abstract:
A collection of sources and chronicles on the persecution of Jews from 1147 to 1938 in Lower Franconia. The document from 1147 describes a blood libel which led to a massacre of Jews by Crusaders and townspeople. Other sources describe the "Rintfleisch" pogroms of 1298, the "Armleder" pogrom of 1336-1337, and the pogrom of 1349. Several documents deal with conflicts between the bishop, the burghers and the knights between 1557-1576 over how to treat the Jews. The Jews' situation slowly improved, though antisemitism persisted; for instance, the "Hep-Hep" riots in 1819 and the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in 1938. The article includes illustrations and facsimiles of documents.
