Abstract:
Orano (1875-1945), a leading fascist ideologue and publicist close to Mussolini, led off the government's anti-Jewish campaign in 1937 with his book "Gli ebrei in Italia". He followed this up with other writings and played an important part in shaping Italy's antisemitic policy. Shows that his antisemitism appeared already in his early works, particularly in his attack on the Jewish mayor of Rome, Ernesto Nathan, in 1911, and on the liberal opponents of the war in Libya and of Italy's entry into the First World War. There, as in "Gli ebrei", he describes Jews as a subversive element in any nation because they belong to none; they are enemies of the state and of the Catholic Church.
