Abstract: Discusses Weiss's "Die Ermittlung" (1965), a spoken oratorio of four and one-half hours, inspired by the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials (1963-65). Examines the drama's composition, the role of Nazi perpetrators, and various productions. Argues that all of the productions focus on the perpetrators, who seem to provide the key to understanding Auschwitz. Whether dissected or kept at a distance, their attempts at denial and cynicism fail, and the truth is revealed by their silences and gestures. Some productions testify to the undeniable success of Weiss's dramaturgy, which urges the viewer to commemorate the dead and actively participate in restoring justice.
