Abstract:
Analyzes four different theories on the social and theological links of Matthew's community with Jews and Judaism, as reflected by Matthew's Gospel, known for its anti-Jewish polemics. States that the Gospel's anti-Jewish expressions were an instrument in the struggle with the Pharisaic trend for theological legitimacy of a minority Judeo-Christian "sect" seeking to monopolize Judaism. This polemic between Jews could not possibly express anti-Jewish hatred but, taken out of context, it was unfortunately used to give theological legitimacy to Christian hostility against Jews and their persecution through the centuries.
