Abstract:
The Israeli Jewish and the Israeli Palestinian facilitators of a mixed group of students from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev describe group reactions to a joint visit in Buchenwald. Although previously the group had attained a great degree of solidarity, after the visit the Jews "crucified" the Palestinians, accusing them of not showing the proper emotions. Zak, the Jewish facilitator, suggests that the Jewish students may have been angry at themselves at not feeling the trauma required by the Israeli consensus; they projected this anger onto the Palestinians. Halabi, the Palestinian facilitator, wonders why anger was directed against the Palestinians rather than against the Germans, and places this reaction in the context of Israeli dehumanization of the Palestinians.
