Abstract:
Agrees with the view that Bach's Cantata 46 focuses on a call for Christians to turn from their own sin, but insists that the theological anti-Judaism in this work is fundamental to its message about Divine wrath. Refers to books in Bach's library to show how the composer's Lutheran heritage taught that those who do not reject Judaism will be lost. While he did not, like Luther, espouse violence against the Jews, Bach did depict the Jews as irreparably out of Divine favor. Concludes that Cantata 46 presents Bach's art at its musically and theologically grimmest.
