Abstract:
Noting that Hermann had struggled with the question of antisemitism for years before the Nazi takeover, discusses his essays on the subject and on the Jewish future witten after 1933 in Dutch exile. He saw the First World War as "the death of an era" ("Eine Zeit stirbt" was the title of his novel of 1934), the death of humanism and rationalism, of European culture, in Germany and eventually in all of Europe. Defending the assimilation of that culture by German Jews, he called on them to continue to uphold it and not revert to a confining Jewish culture and an anachronistic emulation of East European Jews, as much of German Jewry did in reaction to persecution.
