Abstract:
Discusses the use of Jewish idioms in Shostakovich's musical compositions, his sympathy for the Jewish people, and his strong opposition to antisemitism. Describes the bravery of this stance, especially in the postwar USSR when it was highly unpopular and even dangerous. Refers especially to his 13th symphony ("Babi Yar"), inspired by Yevtushenko's poem. After its premiere in Moscow in December 1962, it was banned by Khrushchev and did not reappear in Russia for another ten years. Shostakovich died in 1975.
