Abstract:
In the context of discussing Islamophobia in Europe, especially in Germany, compares that fear with antisemitism. While noting similarities (e.g. popular anxiety in regard to Muslim and Jewish traditional restrictions relating to food and clothing), stresses one major difference between the two phobias. The fear, before World War II, of a Jewish conspiracy against Europe had no basis in fact, while the present-day fear of the expansionist or conversionary ambitions openly expressed by leading Muslim intellectuals, and shared by some ordinary Muslims, is not groundless. The average European may not understand the subtleties of the global implications of the fundamental idea of the Nation of Islam, but he instinctively fears the challenge it poses to his values and way of life. Notes that only a minority of Muslim immigrants in Europe see themselves as following a mission of proselytizing for Islam, but this small group does pose a real threat to Europe.
